Did you hear about our new Free Course? Unlocking the Secrets of Hearing Loss!

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of an exciting collaboration between Grey Matter Learning and eargym: an expert-led course titled ‘Unlocking the Secrets of Hearing Loss’.

This comprehensive and enlightening course is designed to empower individuals with a deep understanding of hearing loss, its effects, and the actionable knowledge needed to navigate this often-underestimated condition.

Hearing loss is more serious than most people realise and it affects much more than just our hearing. The course aims to raise awareness about the importance of looking after our hearing and highlight what we can do to reduce the impact of hearing loss on our quality of life.

Together, we want to make hearing science easy and accessible for everyone to understand. We hope that by the end of this course, people have the knowledge to spot hearing loss in others and guide them to get the right help, help prevent further hearing loss, and to reduce the impacts on our quality of life to ultimately stay active, independent and connected longer.

Five things you need to know about hearing:

  1. Hearing is correlated with social isolation, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. In fact, research suggests that addressing hearing loss in mid-life is the biggest amenable risk factor for dementia – this means something we can change to potentially reduce our risk.
  2. Unaddressed hearing loss could increase your rate of cognitive decline by up to 40%.
  3. Only 6% of people in the UK who don’t have a diagnosed hearing loss checked their hearing in the past year.
  4. 1 in 3 people with hearing loss aged over 50 haven’t been diagnosed and aren’t receiving the support they need.
  5. Hearing loss often happens gradually which can make it hard to spot. The first signs often include missing parts of words, needing to turn the volume up, and having difficulty hearing well when there’s lots of background noise. The good news is that it’s never too late to address hearing loss and there’s lots we can do to reduce its impact on our quality of life and reconnect with the people around us.
