Person Centred Learning

Do more than train, learn.

Sometimes, it’s easy to focus on what’s happening in the here and now within your job role, especially with the increased demand for social care in recent months. Anything additional which you need to know to update your professional development can wait until your next annual training session, right? Well, not quite. Why would you wait for training when you can learn something new every day?  ‘Person centred learning’ is all about using lots of different learning methods.

Let’s go through each of the steps to identify how you and/or your team can benefit from person centred learning.

  1. Click Learning and Assessments:
Want to do your Assessment without completing the training? Sure! Your e-portfolio allows you to upload evidence which demonstrates that you understand the knowledge and skills, and how to put these into practice within the workplace. When it comes to the Assessment, we like to think of it as the most important piece of the puzzle! It shows that you know, what you know!

  1. Traditional Training:
Once upon a time, training took place face-to-face and only face-to-face. But in 2020, we learnt that it doesn’t have to be like that! Face-to-face training is great place to start and ‘humanise’ the learning experience. Although, it doesn’t need to be face-to-face 100% of the time.

  1. Feedback:
Have you ever asked someone who you care for for feedback? Feedback from observations and spot checks are valuable tools. This can really help to tailor the care that you’re providing so that it suits them as well as helping to improve your own development. Everyone’s a winner!

  1. Mentoring and Shadowing:
No matter what level you are at within the business, shadowing a colleague is a great way to learn and share best practice. When shadowing, make sure to ask loads of questions and absorb as much as you can. Don’t be afraid to ask for a mentor to show you something. Remember, they were once in your shoes!

  1. Virtual Sessions:
We’ve mentioned traditional training and how this can be a great start, but if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s how many resources and opportunities for development are available online. If you’re not already, it’s time to take advantage!

  1. Google it!
Or Bing it, or Yahoo it… you get the picture! If you don’t know something, there’s a big world wide web out there full of answers!

So, what have we learnt? There’s more to your professional development than annual face-to-face training. Training is just one facilitator of learning.

Do more than training, transform it into learning and practice.
